Celebrating 50 years of community impact at NorWest Co-op Community Health

This year NorWest Co-op Community Health is celebrating 50 years of service in Winnipeg. As the only co-operative Community Health Centre in Manitoba, NorWest Co-op has been committed to engaging our community in co-operative health and wellness guided by trauma-informed and harm reduction principles.

Throughout our years of service, our dedicated team has delivered exceptional community-based services and programs in areas such as team-based Primary Care, Community Development, Counselling and Support Services, and Early Learning and Childcare.

From our early days at 61 Tyndall Avenue with 30 staff employed, to today as an ACCESS Centre with just under two hundred staff and volunteers, our organization and programs continue to grow.

Over the past few years, our organization has experienced significant expansion of the services and programs we are able to offer members of the community. Our establishment of a Community Food Centre has given us the opportunity to provide healthy meals and food education to community members right in their neighbourhood.  Our Family Violence program has expanded to include services for male identifying individuals who have abused, or been abused themselves. This is an important initiative in combating gender-based violence.   And, our Youth Hub has also seen considerable growth over the past few years bridging the gap in access to mental health services for youth in Winnipeg.  Currently, the Youth Hub is serving as the model for other new satellite Youth Hub sites in the city of Winnipeg.

To commemorate our 50th anniversary in 2022, we are undertaking a number of exciting initiatives this year.  Through our social media platforms we will be showcasing 50 community success stories, as well as surveying community members in order to get critical input on planning for our next 50 years.  We are also engaging community members in an art contest, where people can submit NorWest inspired art pieces for a chance to win a prize.  Later this year we are also planning to release a short documentary on NorWest Co-op Community Health highlighting our history and impact in community health.  To wrap it up, together with members of the community, we will be holding a large event in the summer with fun activities, music and food to celebrate our milestone.

Follow us on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) to see our upcoming community success stories, and to stay up to date on all the other exiting things we have planned for this year.
