Coverage for prescription drugs in Canada is an uncoordinated patchwork of private and public plans which is costly, confusing and leaves large portions of Canadians without the medicines they need. It puts profits of large pharmaceutical and insurance companies ahead of the needs of Canadian households and businesses.
Nearly 1 out of every 4 Canadians says they or someone in their household can’t afford their prescription drugs.
Canada is the only country with a universal healthcare system which does not also include universal access to prescription drugs. As a result, Canadians pay more and get less.
A universal, public National Pharmacare Program will improve access to medicines and save Canada and Canadian households and businesses at least $4 billion each year.
91% of Canadians say they support the establishment of universal, public National Pharmacare.
Countless studies and national commissions over the past four decades have recommended a universal, public Naational Pharmacare program and, in April 2018, a House of Commons Committee with members from all political parties also formally recommended implementation of universal, public National Pharmacare for Canadians.
A National Advisory Council is currently studying how best to implement universal, public National Pharmacare and will report to the federal government in early 2019.
